Kawasaki ZX-10R Engine Oil Capacity

The short answer
A Kawasaki ZX-10R engine holds roughly 4 litres of oil when it is completely dry, for example after a rebuild. A routine drain and refill needs less, because some oil stays inside the engine. Commonly cited figures for a routine change fall between about 3.4 and 3.7 litres. The amount depends on whether the oil filter is replaced and on the model generation. Treat these numbers as approximate. The final section explains what could not be confirmed.
Why there is more than one number
Motorcycle service manuals usually list engine oil capacity for three situations. A single capacity figure that does not say which situation it covers is the most common source of confusion.
Oil change without filter replacement: the smallest quantity, because the old filter and some passages stay full. Oil change with filter replacement: a little more, because the new filter and its housing must be filled. Engine completely dry: the largest figure. This applies after an overhaul, when no residual oil remains.
Model year and generation
Kawasaki has built the ZX-10R since 2004 across several generations: 2004 to 2005, 2006 to 2007, 2008 to 2010, 2011 to 2015, 2016 to 2020, and 2021 onward. There are also related variants such as the ZX-10RR. Capacities across these generations are broadly similar, but they should not be assumed identical. Market-specific versions and track bikes with an aftermarket oil cooler or modified sump may also hold a different amount.
Set the final level with the sight glass
A manual capacity figure is a starting point, not a target to pour in blindly. The ZX-10R has an oil level inspection window, often called a sight glass, on the lower part of the engine. The level in that window is what confirms a correct fill.
Add slightly less than the listed quantity for your type of oil change. Start the engine and let it idle briefly so oil circulates and fills the filter. Stop the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump. Hold the bike upright, not leaning on the side stand, and read the level in the window. Top up a little at a time until the level sits between the upper and lower marks.
Overfilling can be as unhelpful as running low, so small top-ups are safer than adding the full quantity at once.
What this article could not confirm
No model-year-specific factory documentation was available for this article. As a result, the exact figures for each generation, and for each type of oil change, are not verified here. Differences for the ZX-10RR and for regional market versions are also unconfirmed. For the precise capacity and recommended oil specification for your bike, check the owner's manual or service manual for its model year, or ask a Kawasaki dealer with the frame number to hand.
