The second-generation Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen-powered sedan that swaps the usual fuel tank for compressed hydrogen, producing electricity on board and emitting only water vapour as it drives.
The Toyota Mirai engine is really a fuel cell stack feeding an electric motor, as in the AT (Sedan; hydrogen; automatic; rear-wheel drive) example. Hydrogen from the tanks reacts with air to make electricity, so the powertrain drives the rear wheels smoothly and quietly, with no gearshifts to interrupt acceleration.
