The first-generation DeSoto Fireflite arrived as the brand's flagship, offered as an open Cabrio, a pillarless Coupe Hardtop and a practical Sedan. It paired bold mid-fifties styling with the relaxed, effortless driving character buyers expected from a premium American car.
Every DeSoto Fireflite engine here is a large gasoline V8, with displacements around 5.3 and 5.4 litres, as in the 5.3 AT Cabrio and Coupe Hardtop or the 5.4 AT Cabrio. The powertrain sends torque rearward through an automatic transmission, so this rear-wheel-drive drivetrain favours quiet, unhurried cruising over frequent gearchanges.
