Volvo S40 Oil Filter: How to Identify the Right One for Your Car
The short answer
No single oil filter fits every Volvo S40. The correct filter depends on which generation of S40 you have and which engine it uses. Model year, market and engine code can change both the filter style and the part number. Before buying, confirm the exact filter for your car using the vehicle identification number (VIN), the owner's manual or the filter currently fitted.
Why the S40 has more than one filter type
The S40 name covers two distinct generations. The first was sold from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. The second, built on a platform shared with other Ford-era models, followed and ran until around 2012. Across both generations and different markets, the S40 used several petrol and diesel engines from different engine families. Each family can use its own filter design.
Oil filters come in two main formats, and knowing which one your engine uses narrows the search quickly:
Spin-on filter: a sealed metal canister with the filter inside. The whole unit screws onto the engine and is replaced as one piece. Cartridge (element) filter: a paper or synthetic filter element without a metal casing. It sits inside a permanent housing on the engine. Only the element is replaced, usually along with the rubber O-ring seals on the housing cap.
These two types are not interchangeable. A part listed simply as fitting the S40 may suit only some engines in some years.
How to confirm the right filter for your car
Identify the model year and generation. Registration documents or the VIN will show this. Identify the engine. The engine code or displacement is usually on the registration documents, in the service book, or on a label or casting on the engine. The trim badge alone may not be enough. Note the market. Engine availability differed between regions, so a filter listing for one market may not cover another. Look at the filter currently fitted. Check whether it is a metal canister or a housing with a cap. If a part number is visible, use it to cross-reference. Use a VIN-based parts lookup. A dealer parts counter or a parts catalogue that searches by VIN can resolve differences that a model-and-year search can miss.
What to check when buying
For a cartridge-type engine, check whether the replacement element comes with the O-rings for the housing cap. Reusing old, hardened seals can cause leaks. For a spin-on type, check that the listing names your specific engine, not just the S40 model. Whether you choose a genuine Volvo part or an aftermarket equivalent, the filter should be listed as meeting the specification for your engine.
Information not covered here
This guide does not list specific part numbers, oil capacities, filter dimensions, tightening torques or prices, because none were available to verify for each engine and year. Get those details from the owner's manual, a workshop manual for your exact engine, or a VIN-based parts lookup before you order or start the oil change.
