Honda CR-V 12V Battery Size and Replacement (2007–2014)

· 674 words

The short answer for a 2013 CR-V

For a 2013 Honda CR-V sold in North America with the 2.4-liter gasoline engine, retailer fitment catalogs most commonly list a group size 51R 12-volt battery. The 2007 through 2014 model years covered here are generally listed with the same group size. This guide was not checked against a manufacturer or retailer fitment source, so confirm the size for your vehicle before you buy. The steps for doing that are below.

"Group size" is a standard code from the Battery Council International (BCI). It describes a battery's outer case dimensions and where its terminals sit. The "R" in 51R means the terminal positions are reversed compared with a plain group 51 battery. That matters because the CR-V's battery cables are cut to reach terminals in a specific layout. A group 51 battery may fit the tray but leave the cables too short, or put the positive and negative terminals on the wrong sides.

Which model years this applies to

Model year | Generation | Commonly listed group size (North America, 2.4L gasoline); 2007 | Third generation (2007–2011) | 51R; 2010 | Third generation (2007–2011) | 51R; 2012 | Fourth generation (2012–2016) | 51R; 2013 | Fourth generation (2012–2016) | 51R; 2014 | Fourth generation (2012–2016) | 51R

These listings apply only to North American models with the gasoline engine. CR-Vs sold in other markets during these years, including versions with diesel engines, may use a different battery. If your vehicle was built for a market outside North America or has a different powertrain, don't assume the 51R listing applies to it.

How to confirm the right battery before buying

Read the label on the battery currently installed, if it is the original or a correct replacement. The group size is usually printed on the top or side. Check the owner's manual for the battery specifications Honda lists for your model year. Use a parts retailer's fitment lookup and enter your exact year, trim and engine. A VIN-based lookup is better if the retailer offers one. When you are at the vehicle, compare the new battery's terminal layout with the cable positions. The positive cable should reach the positive terminal without being stretched.

Group size covers physical fit only. Electrical capacity is a separate check. The two main ratings are cold cranking amps (CCA), which describe how well the battery can start the engine in cold weather, and reserve capacity. Use the ratings on the original battery or in the owner's manual as your minimum. A battery that meets or exceeds them is generally a safe choice, especially in a cold climate.

Replacing the battery: what to check

Battery replacement on these CR-Vs is usually treated as a basic job. The general procedure for a 12-volt battery is:

Turn off the engine and all accessories, and remove the key. Disconnect the negative (black, minus) cable first, then the positive (red, plus) cable. Remove the hold-down bracket that secures the battery, then lift the battery out. Batteries are heavy, so use a firm, level grip. Clean the tray and the cable terminals if there is corrosion. Put in the new battery with the terminals oriented the same way as the old one, then refit the hold-down so the battery cannot move. Connect the positive cable first, then the negative cable, and tighten both clamps.

Before you disconnect the battery, find out whether your audio unit needs an anti-theft code to work again after power loss. If it does and you don't have the code, get it first. After the new battery is installed, the engine may idle unevenly briefly, and some stored settings such as radio presets or the clock may need to be reset. Most retailers accept the old battery for recycling, and some charge a core deposit that is refunded when you return it.

What this guide does not cover

No source material was provided for battery dimensions, minimum CCA or reserve capacity ratings, prices, warranty terms or brand recommendations, so none are given here. The 51R listing has also not been checked against an official Honda fitment source for each trim. Use your owner's manual, the label on your current battery or a retailer's fitment lookup to settle these details for your specific vehicle.
