Every first-generation BMW M2 engine is a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol six driving the rear wheels. Buyers choose the transmission: the M2 3.0 MT uses a six-speed manual with rev-matching, while the M2 3.0 DCT pairs a dual-clutch robotic gearbox with faster shifts and easier traffic driving. Both share the same rear-drive layout.
BMW M2 trim levels work differently from ordinary models, because the M2 badge itself is the equipment configuration. The M2 3.0 DCT, for example, carries a single M2 specification, so cars are separated mainly by optional packages, seats, audio, driver assistance and wheel choices rather than by ascending trims.
