Volvo Penta Outdrive Oil: What Your Drive Needs

The short answer
Volvo Penta sterndrives (the outdrive unit mounted on the transom behind an inboard engine) take a gear oil that Volvo Penta specifies for each drive model. For many current drives, including the single-propeller SX family and the twin-propeller DuoProp (DPS) family, the commonly cited specification is a synthetic SAE 75W-90 gear oil meeting API GL-5. Volvo Penta also sells its own synthetic gear oil for this purpose. That is the general answer, but it is not universal across every Volvo Penta drive.
Why the drive model and serial number matter
Volvo Penta has built several outdrive families over the decades, including the older 200-, 270-, 280- and 290-series drives as well as the SX and DuoProp lines. Lubricant recommendations have changed between families and, in some cases, between production years within a family. An oil that is correct for a current DPS drive is not automatically correct for an older drive, so the specific drive model and serial number determine the answer.
The reliable way to confirm the specification is to check the owner's or service manual for your exact drive, or to ask a Volvo Penta dealer using the drive's serial number. The serial number is normally on a plate or decal on the drive unit.
What to confirm before buying or changing oil
Drive family and model, such as SX-A, DPS-A or an older series drive. Drive serial number, to identify the production version. Required viscosity grade and API service classification, including whether synthetic oil is specified. Oil capacity for your drive and the approved method for checking the level. Whether the manufacturer recommends a particular brand or allows any oil that meets the stated specification.
A warning sign worth knowing
When you check or drain outdrive oil, look at its condition. Milky, grey or cloudy oil usually means water has entered the gearcase, often through a worn seal. Changing the oil will not fix this. The source of the leak should be found and repaired before the drive is used heavily, because water-contaminated lubricant can damage the gears and bearings.
Gaps in this guide
This guide does not list capacities, part numbers, change intervals or model-by-model specifications. No verified data for those details was available, and they vary by drive and production year. Treat the 75W-90 synthetic GL-5 figure as the typical recommendation for current SX and DPS drives. Confirm it against Volvo Penta's documentation for your specific unit, especially if you own an older drive.
