Pontiac Grand AM in Context
Pontiac introduced the Grand AM as a mid-size car built on the same colonnade platform as the LeMans and Grand Prix. The name deliberately combined Grand Prix and Trans Am, signalling luxury and performance in one package. The generation is recognizable by its flexible urethane nose with narrow vertical grilles, a design that absorbed minor impacts and set the car apart from its LeMans siblings. Pontiac Grand AM body styles were limited to two: the two-door hardtop coupe with fixed rear quarter glass and the four-door hardtop sedan. Inside, real wood trim and reclining bucket seats supported the European theme. Rising fuel prices and insurance costs cut the run short, so all three model years belong to this single generation.
