Mazda Protege in Context
Mazda built its compact line on a single global platform, known in Japan as the Familia and elsewhere as the 323. For North America the company chose to separate the sedan from the hatchback, and any Mazda Protege overview begins with that decision. Among Mazda Protege generations this first one is the simplest to understand because it came in a single body style, the sedan, over its whole run from 1989 to 1994. Later Mazda Protege body styles would add a hatchback and a wagon, but here the four-door defines the model. Its clean, rounded lines and generous glass area were typical of Mazda design at the turn of the decade, and Mazda Protege dimensions placed it comfortably in the compact class while offering more rear-seat room than many rivals.
