The Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0 is a fifth-generation double-cab pickup, and one useful place to start is how its gasoline powertrain and automatic gearbox share the work of changing speed.

Type of boost?
A turbocharger or supercharger compresses the air entering the engine so a smaller engine can produce more power. Naturally aspirated engines draw air without a compressor. Glossary entry
Turbo
Type of drive?
Which wheels receive power: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive can send power to every wheel for extra traction. Glossary entry
AWD
Bore and stroke?
The diameter of a cylinder (bore) and the distance the piston travels inside it (stroke). Together they determine the displacement of the engine. Glossary entry
85.4 x 86 mm
Engine capacity?
The total volume swept by all pistons inside the cylinders, usually stated in cubic centimetres or litres. Larger displacement often means more power but higher consumption. Glossary entry
2949 cm³

Number of gears?
How many fixed forward ratios a gearbox offers. More gears can improve economy and refinement; continuously variable transmissions have no fixed steps. Glossary entry
10
Maximum power?
A unit of engine or motor output. One metric horsepower is about 0.735 kilowatts. Peak power is normally reached at high engine speed. Glossary entry
405 hp
Maximum power, kw?
A unit of engine or motor output. One metric horsepower is about 0.735 kilowatts. Peak power is normally reached at high engine speed. Glossary entry
297 kW
Compression ratio?
The ratio between the largest and smallest volume of a cylinder as the piston moves. Higher ratios improve efficiency but may require higher-octane fuel. Glossary entry

Valves per cylinder?
The number of intake and exhaust valves in each cylinder. Four valves per cylinder is common and helps the engine breathe at higher speeds. Glossary entry

Engine and Transmission
A gasoline engine turns fastest in the lower ratios. When the automatic transmission shifts upward, the same road speed is achieved with fewer crankshaft revolutions, so engine speed drops briefly at each change; downshifting reverses that, lifting revs to restore pulling effort.
Drivetrain and Everyday Driving
An all-wheel-drive layout is mechanical: it decides which wheels can receive engine torque. A traction-control function is electronic, trimming power or braking a slipping wheel after the fact. The layout distributes drive; the software only reacts to what slips.
Body and Practicality
A double-cab pickup's open bed is measured by area and sidewall height, not sealed volume. A long ladder or an awkward wardrobe may fit where the same litres of soft bags would not, because rigid objects cannot be reshaped around wheel arches.
