How to Reset the Oil Life Monitor on a Ford Transit

· 469 words

The short answer

On most current Ford Transit vans, you reset the oil life reading through the instrument cluster menu. Use the steering-wheel arrow buttons, then press and hold OK on the oil life item until the display confirms the reset or shows 100 percent. Do this after the oil and filter have been changed. Resetting without a service clears the reminder but does nothing for the engine.

The exact menu path and button labels depend on the model year, market and instrument cluster. The steps below describe the general pattern. They are not a verified procedure for every Transit, so check the owner's manual for your van if the menus don't match.

Which Transit this applies to

Ford sells several vans under the Transit name. The full-size Transit is sold in North America from the 2015 model year onward, and the current-generation Transit is sold in Europe and other markets. These are the vans most likely to use the menu-based reset described here. The smaller Transit Connect and Transit Custom are separate models whose cluster layouts can differ. Older European Transits from before the current generation may use a different service-indicator reset altogether.

General menu-based reset steps

1) Switch the ignition on. The engine does not need to be running. 2) Use the arrow buttons on the left side of the steering wheel to scroll through the cluster menus. 3) Open the menu that holds vehicle or service settings. Depending on the cluster, it may be labeled Settings, Vehicle or Information. 4) Select the oil life item. 5) Press and hold OK until the display shows that the reset is complete or that oil life is at 100 percent. 6) Switch the ignition off, then back on, and check that the new oil life value is still shown.

If the menu option isn't there

Some Ford vehicles without a menu option use a pedal-based reset. On those vehicles, you switch the ignition on, fully press the brake and accelerator together, and hold them until a reset message appears. No supplied source confirms whether, or in which years, this method applies to the Transit. Treat it as something to check in your owner's manual, not a documented Transit procedure.

If none of the steps work, a dealer or a workshop with a diagnostic tool can reset the reading during the service.

What the oil life reading means

The percentage is an estimate based on how the van has been driven. It is not a measurement of the oil's actual condition. After a reset, it starts again from 100 percent. Ford's published service intervals for your van and market still apply, including any time-based limit that may fall before the percentage runs out.

Information gaps

No model-year-specific menu names, button sequences or service intervals were supplied for this guide. The steps above are a general outline. The owner's manual for your Transit's model year, cluster type and market is the authoritative source for the exact procedure.
