Install RAV4 body side molding
What the job is
On a 2017 Toyota RAV4, body side molding installation means fitting the long plastic door protectors along the lower sides of the vehicle so they sit level, follow the factory contour, and stay bonded. For this model year the work is a surface-mount adhesive job on the XA40 generation (North American 2013–2018 fourth generation, including the 2016–2018 facelift that covers 2017). It is not a welded or bolted body repair, and it is not the same as replacing lower rocker cladding, wheel-arch flares, or painted door skins.
The supported next action is to confirm you have a 2017-correct left and right, front and rear set, then install only after the paint is clean, dry, and within a temperature range the tape can bond. Exact OEM part numbers, tape widths, molding lengths, and factory alignment heights are not supplied here; those come from the parts catalog and service information for your market and body color. If the vehicle already has moldings, remove them and residual adhesive first rather than stacking a new strip on old tape.
Fitment you must confirm first
A 2017 RAV4 uses generation-specific door moldings. Pieces for an earlier XA30 (2006–2012) or later XA50 (2019–) RAV4 will not follow the 2017 door stampings. Front-door and rear-door profiles also differ from each other, and left-hand pieces are not interchangeable with right-hand pieces. Some trims and markets left the factory with body-color or accent moldings already fitted; others did not. Aftermarket kits sold as “RAV4 side moldings” still need a 2013–2018 (or explicitly 2016–2018) listing, not a generic compact-crossover listing.
Confirm model year and generation: 2017 XA40, not 2019-up. Confirm a four-piece door set when that is what you bought: left front, right front, left rear, right rear. Confirm whether your kit is for painted doors only, or whether it also claims to cover fender or quarter-panel pieces. Confirm color: body-color, primed (needs paint), or a fixed accent such as black or chrome-look, matching the rest of the vehicle. Confirm the doors are original stampings. Aftermarket doors, prior collision repair, or existing aftermarket cladding can change the reference edges used for alignment.
What the moldings attach with
Most 2017 RAV4 body side moldings, OEM and aftermarket, bond with pre-applied automotive acrylic foam tape on the back of each strip. A minority of kits add locating pins, clips, or a short mechanical fastener at an end; that is kit-specific and should be treated as required if the piece has a hole or boss for it. Do not assume screw holes exist on a 2017 door. The tape is the primary retention method on a typical kit.
Acrylic foam tape needs a clean, dry, wax-free painted surface and enough contact pressure to wet the adhesive onto the clearcoat. Cold, wet, or freshly waxed paint is a common reason a molding lifts at the ends. Published OEM temperature and cure windows for this exact part were not provided for this article; follow the temperature and wait-time printed on the kit, or the tape maker’s automotive-trim instructions, rather than guessing a number.
Tools and supplies
The four moldings, identified left/right and front/rear before the liner comes off. Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths for final wipe-down. Painter’s tape for a temporary height guide along the door. A soft measuring method (tape measure or a marked card) to keep height consistent door to door. A plastic trim tool if old moldings or adhesive must come off first. Adhesive remover rated safe for automotive clearcoat, used only if residue remains after mechanical removal. A clean roller or firm hand pressure along the full length after placement. Optional: a helper to hold the long front-door piece while the first end is set.
A torque specification does not apply unless your specific kit uses a threaded fastener. If it does, use the value in that kit’s instructions; a generic body-bolt torque is not a substitute.
Remove old moldings if present
Warm the existing strip with a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting so the tape softens, then work a plastic trim tool under an end and peel slowly along the door. Pull the molding itself, not the paint. Remaining foam and adhesive should come off with plastic scraping and a clearcoat-safe remover, then a full alcohol wipe. Stop if paint lifts; that is a refinish issue, not a molding-install issue. Do not install a new strip over leftover tape ridges. Those ridges show through and prevent full contact.
Prepare the doors
Wash the vehicle and dry it completely. Remove wax, silicone, and quick-detailer from the install band with isopropyl alcohol until the cloth no longer picks up residue. Work in a sheltered area. The door must be at a temperature the tape instructions allow; installing in a cold garage overnight and expecting an immediate bond is a frequent failure mode. Open each door so you can see the shut faces and avoid wrapping a molding onto a fender or rear quarter by accident. On a 2017 RAV4 the typical install band is the lower portion of each door skin, above the rocker, following a line that looks even with the adjacent door when both are closed.
Set the alignment before the liner comes off
Dry-fit every piece with the adhesive liner still on. Close the doors and check that front and rear moldings meet in a straight visual line across the door gap, with even spacing from the gap, the character line, and the lower door edge. Mark the chosen height with a light painter’s-tape guide on each door. Transfer that height from the front door to the rear door on the same side, then repeat on the opposite side of the vehicle so left and right match.
Factory height is not a single public millimeter figure in the material available for this article. Use the old molding’s witness line if paint has faded around it, the kit’s template if one is included, or a consistent measurement from a repeatable edge such as the lower door hem—provided that hem is undamaged and the same on every door. Do not use the wheel-arch flare or a bumper cover as the only reference; those parts can sit off the original body position after prior repairs.
Install each molding
Start with one door. Peel only a short section of liner from one end—usually the end that meets a door gap, because that joint is the most visible. Align that end to your tape guide and to the door-gap margin you chose in the dry fit. Tack that end, then peel the liner progressively while you keep the strip on the guide line. Do not stretch the molding. Stretching makes it creep back and open a gap later.
Once the full length is on the line, press firmly along the entire tape path, including the ends and any slight contour change over the door’s pressings. A clean roller helps apply even pressure without sliding the piece. Repeat for the remaining three doors, checking the closed-door line after each piece. If a piece lands off line, pull it immediately. After the adhesive wets out, a full reset usually means replacing that molding or at least replacing the tape; peeling and resticking the same foam often leaves a weak bond.
Keep left/right and front/rear pieces matched to the door you are on. Set the visible door-gap ends first so the joint looks even with the adjacent door closed. Leave the painter’s-tape guide in place until the strip is fully pressed, then remove it by pulling away from the new molding so you do not lift an edge. Stay off the moving beltline weatherstrip and off the lower door hem return; the molding belongs on the outer door skin.
After the strips are on
Leave the vehicle parked and the doors closed enough that nothing strikes the new edges. Avoid high-pressure washing, automatic car washes, and wax over the molding edges until the tape has had the cure time stated by the kit or tape maker. If no time is printed, treat the first day as a no-wash period and inspect the ends before the first wash. A lifted corner should be pressed back only if it is still clean; dirt in the bond line means that end needs new tape or a replacement piece.
Problems that change the answer
Wrong generation kit: 2019-up XA50 moldings will not follow a 2017 door. Paint damage or peeling clearcoat in the bond area: bonding over failing paint will take the finish with the molding later. Existing lower cladding or accessory body kit: you may be looking at a different part family than a simple door-side molding. Hybrid versus gasoline, LE versus Limited, and similar 2017 powertrain or trim splits do not by themselves change door-molding shape in the information used here; color, market, and whether the vehicle already had moldings matter more. If the kit uses clips into the door, stop and compare clip locations to the door before drilling. A 2017 RAV4 door should not be drilled unless the instructions for that exact kit require it and the hole location is defined.
When to hand the job off
Have a body shop or dealer install the set if the doors were recently painted and are still in a refinish cure window, if you cannot get a consistent height line across all four doors, or if old adhesive has already damaged the clearcoat. Painting primed moldings to a 2017 factory color also belongs with a refinish shop: color code, clearcoat, and edge sealing are paint work, not trim-tape work. For a clean 2017 XA40 with a year-correct adhesive kit, the owner-level path is dry-fit, alcohol prep, guided placement, and firm, unstretched contact along the full tape path.
