Mercedes GLK 2.1 AT Specs — First Generation Restyling
The Mercedes GLK 2.1 AT, from the first generation restyling, is a five-door diesel SUV. One useful starting point is how its automatic transmission passes engine rotation through to the driven wheels.

Type of boost?
A turbocharger or supercharger compresses the air entering the engine so a smaller engine can produce more power. Naturally aspirated engines draw air without a compressor. Glossary entry
Turbo
Type of drive?
Which wheels receive power: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive can send power to every wheel for extra traction. Glossary entry
RWD
Bore and stroke?
The diameter of a cylinder (bore) and the distance the piston travels inside it (stroke). Together they determine the displacement of the engine. Glossary entry
Not provided
Engine capacity?
The total volume swept by all pistons inside the cylinders, usually stated in cubic centimetres or litres. Larger displacement often means more power but higher consumption. Glossary entry
2143 cm³

Not provided
Number of gears?
How many fixed forward ratios a gearbox offers. More gears can improve economy and refinement; continuously variable transmissions have no fixed steps. Glossary entry

Maximum power?
A unit of engine or motor output. One metric horsepower is about 0.735 kilowatts. Peak power is normally reached at high engine speed. Glossary entry

Maximum power, kw?
A unit of engine or motor output. One metric horsepower is about 0.735 kilowatts. Peak power is normally reached at high engine speed. Glossary entry
105 kW
Compression ratio?
The ratio between the largest and smallest volume of a cylinder as the piston moves. Higher ratios improve efficiency but may require higher-octane fuel. Glossary entry

Valves per cylinder?
The number of intake and exhaust valves in each cylinder. Four valves per cylinder is common and helps the engine breathe at higher speeds. Glossary entry

Engine and Transmission
In an automatic, a fluid coupling lets the engine keep turning while the vehicle stands still, then multiplies torque as it takes up drive. Gear sets then trade rotational speed for pulling effort, which a tall five-door SUV body asks for when moving off.
Drivetrain and Everyday Driving
Rear-wheel drive says only which axle receives torque. What happens near the grip limit depends on suspension geometry, weight distribution, tyres and the electronic stability and traction systems that intervene, none of which a drivetrain label describes.
Body and Practicality
The tailgate aperture of a five-door SUV is narrower and shallower than the load bay behind it, because wheel arches and rear pillars intrude at the opening. A bulky item may fit inside yet still need turning to pass through.
