How to Reset the Oil Life Indicator on a Honda Odyssey

· 489 words

After an oil change, the Honda Odyssey's oil life reading has to be reset manually so the Maintenance Minder can start tracking the new oil. The Maintenance Minder is Honda's onboard system that estimates remaining oil life from operating conditions and shows the result as a percentage. On the 2007 and 2008 Odyssey, you reset it with the SELECT/RESET knob on the instrument cluster. No tools or scan equipment are needed.

Which Odysseys this procedure covers

The 2007 and 2008 model years both belong to the third-generation Odyssey, which ran from 2005 to 2010. The steps below are the commonly documented method for that generation. Display layout can vary by trim, for example on models with navigation, so treat the owner's manual for your specific vehicle as the final authority.

Later Odyssey generations use different controls, including steering-wheel buttons and, on newer models, menu-based displays. This article does not include verified steps for those years. If you own a 2011 or newer Odyssey, follow its owner's manual instead of the procedure below.

Resetting oil life on a 2005–2010 Odyssey, including 2007 and 2008

1) Make sure the oil and filter service has been completed. Resetting does not change the oil; it only restarts the countdown. 2) Turn the ignition to the ON position (II) without starting the engine. 3) Press the SELECT/RESET knob on the instrument cluster repeatedly until the engine oil life percentage appears on the display. 4) Press and hold the knob for about 10 seconds, until the oil life reading and any maintenance codes begin to blink. 5) Release the knob, then press and hold it again for about 5 seconds, until the reading changes to 100 percent. 6) Turn the ignition off, then turn it back on and check that the display still shows 100 percent.

If the reset does not work

The most common cause is a timing problem. Releasing the knob too early, or skipping the step where the display blinks, will usually prevent the reset. Start over from step 2. It may also help to confirm that the ignition is fully in the ON position rather than the accessory position.

If the reading still will not return to 100 percent after several careful attempts, compare these steps against the procedure in your owner's manual. Your trim may use a slightly different display sequence. If that does not resolve it, a Honda dealer can check the system.

What the reset clears

The Maintenance Minder can show service codes alongside the oil life percentage. A main letter indicates the core service, and sub-codes flag additional items. Resetting oil life clears whatever codes are shown at the same time. Only reset after all of the indicated items have been serviced; otherwise the system will no longer remind you of work that is still due.

Gaps in this guide

This guide does not cover exact button timings for every trim, steps for Odyssey generations other than 2005–2010, or the meaning of individual maintenance codes. For any of those details, rely on the owner's manual for your vehicle or ask a Honda service department.
