Engine and Transmission
The gasoline engine produces torque across a limited band of crankshaft speeds; the manual transmission's job is to keep it inside that band by trading ratio for road speed. The driver chooses when that trade happens rather than a control unit.
Drivetrain and Everyday Driving
Rear-wheel drive leaves the front wheels to steer only, so manoeuvring is not affected by drive torque tugging at the steering. At low speed the clutch pedal meters engagement directly, letting the car be edged forward on part-engagement alone.
